The healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 19 to 25 (19 to 23 for Asians).  You are considered overweight if your BMI exceeds 25.  Those whose BMI exceeds 30 are considered obese.

The BMI is derived by dividing the weight in Kg by the square of the height in meters.

American researchers have found that women who are fatter in the middle age will reduce the chances of surviving up to the age of 70.

For every 1 kg gained since age 18, the average women’s odds of surviving past 70 years dropped by 5 percent.

Every one point increase in the BMI will reduce the chance of an average woman of surviving up to the age of 70 years by 12 percent.

Fat women fail to survive to the age of 70 years because of diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

Another study by British researchers also found that people with a BMI from 30 to 35 die about three years earlier than normal. In fact people who are morbidly obese with a BMI exceeding 40 die about 10 years earlier than someone with a healthy BMI.

Other studies all over the world also found similar trends of reduction in lifespan with increase in BMI in men.

In conclusion, if you want to live to a ripe old age beyond 70 years, you should start watching your weight now.

Keep your BMI within the normal range by eating a healthy and balance diet and start exercising at least three times a week
